If Vienna still becomes Chicago
With the short film ‘Synopsis’ the Viennese director Nebojsa Vasic celebrates his screen debut. ‘Synopsis’ (from ancient Greek synopsis - summary of the content of a film) tells the story of scriptwriter Scott P. Miller. Scott, struggling with a dreadful creative crisis, eventually finds new inspiration by creating the character of a serial murderer whose focus is on young attractive women.
In ‘Synopsis’ the audience is given an insight into the atmosphere and the abyss of human psyche and is offered a constant interplay between fact and fiction. Similar to the creation of a real script, ‘Synopsis’ skips back and forth between chapters and timelines of the story, allowing the audience to perceive events directly from the perspective of the torn writer.
Director Nebojsa Vasic successfully transformed more than 700 hours of work and around 8 hours of raw material from various locations of Vienna into a 20-minute work of cinema art. It is reminiscent of the mood of Chicago of the early 80s and in which every scene, setting and many small details are perfectly composed and orchestrated. Nebojsa's love and passion for film culminates in a perfidious psycho thriller in the style of William Lustig's "Maniac" from 1980.
"My fascination for filmmaking stems from the unrestricted ability to move people emotionally. By combining simple tools, such as images, sounds and different techniques, one can express something meaningful and trigger in the audience in an exceptional way. A story can be conceived by the power of visuals to a bigger extend that could never be achieved by words alone" Vasic explains.
Custom Cast
The main cast consists of two emerging young actors by the name Philipp Dornauer and Rosanna Ruo. Both mimes were enthusiastic about the screenplay and Vasic’s plans of implementing it. Their participation in this project is all the more remarkable, considering both actors are currently among the most sought-after performers in the country. While Dornauer is involved in Tyrolean folk plays and in the famous Burgtheater in Vienna, one can see Ruo as Frida Kahlo as Frida herself in the Ateliertheater. "After the first preliminary talk, it was clear to me that I wanted to be part of this project. Nebojsa's way of telling the plot and creating a mood was simply inspiring, "enthuses Dornauer.
